Words are runs of characters between spaces. Characters count every letter, digit, space and symbol (an emoji counts as one). Reading time assumes about 225 words a minute, a typical adult pace for ordinary prose.

The limits list is there for sellers and writers: an Etsy title can be 140 characters and each tag 20, an Instagram bio 150, an Instagram caption 2,200, and a post on X 280. A meta description is trimmed by Google at roughly 155 to 160 characters, so treat that one as a guide rather than a hard rule.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

No. It's counted in your browser and disappears when you close the tab.

How are words counted?

Anything separated by spaces or line breaks is a word, so 'well-known' is one word and a number on its own is a word too.

What is the Etsy title limit?

140 characters. Etsy tags are limited to 20 characters each, and you can use 13 tags per listing.

How is reading time worked out?

Words divided by 225 and rounded. Slow, technical text takes longer.

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes in the main character count. The 'No spaces' figure leaves them out.
