Adding VAT: net price × (1 + rate). £100 at 20% becomes £120. Removing VAT: gross price ÷ (1 + rate). £120 at 20% is £100 net, with £20 of VAT. A common mistake is taking 20% off the gross price, which gives £96 instead of £100.
The UK standard rate is 20%. Some things (home energy, children's car seats) are at 5%, and others, like most food and children's clothes, are zero-rated. Whether you must register for VAT depends on your taxable turnover; check the current threshold on GOV.UK, as it changes.
How do I work out 20% VAT?
Multiply the net price by 1.2 to get the gross price, or divide the gross price by 1.2 to get the net.
How do I take VAT off a price?
Choose 'Remove VAT', type the VAT-inclusive total and pick the rate.
What is the VAT fraction?
At 20%, the VAT in a gross price is one sixth (1/6) of it. At 5%, it's 1/21.
When do I have to register for VAT?
When your taxable turnover goes over the registration threshold. Check the current figure on GOV.UK.
