How it works

Everything is converted through a base unit (metres, kilograms, litres, square metres, metres per second), using exact definitions: an inch is 25.4 mm, a pound is 0.45359237 kg, a UK pint is 568.26125 ml. UK and US measures differ: a UK pint is 20 fl oz and a US pint is 16, so the units are labelled.

Temperature uses formulas rather than ratios. Gas marks are a set of oven settings rather than a continuous scale, so the converter gives the nearest standard mark (for example 180°C is gas mark 4).
