How it works

The number of days is the difference between the two calendar dates, so 1 January to 2 January is 1 day. Add one if you want to count both the first and last day. Years, months and days are counted from the earlier date: whole years first, then whole months, then days left over.

Adding months is done by calendar month, not by 30 days. If you add one month to 31 January there's no 31 February, so you get the last day of February. Dates are worked out without time zones or clock changes, so a day is always a day.

Questions

Does it count the first day?

The main answer doesn't, so 1 January to 2 January is 1 day. The 'Including the start day' line gives the figure that counts both ends.

How many weeks is that?

The weeks and days line shows whole weeks and the days left over.

Can I count backwards?

Yes. Put the later date first and it tells you the dates are the wrong way round while still giving the gap. For adding, choose Subtract.

Does it allow for leap years?

Yes. Real calendar dates are used, so 29 February is handled correctly.
