How it works

HEX is the RGB values written in base 16: #C9A45C is red 201, green 164, blue 92. HSL describes the same colour as a hue angle (0 to 360), a saturation and a lightness, which is easier for making a lighter or duller version of a colour.

The contrast ratio follows the WCAG formula. Body text needs at least 4.5:1 to meet level AA and 7:1 for AAA; large text needs 3:1. A colour with a high ratio against black won't have it against white, so check both.

Questions

How do I convert HEX to RGB?

Paste the code into the HEX box. RGB and HSL fill in automatically.

What contrast ratio do I need?

4.5:1 for normal text (AA), 3:1 for large text. 7:1 is the stricter AAA level.

Does it understand short HEX codes?

Yes, #FA0 is read as #FFAA00.
