How it works

The tip is added to the bill and the total is divided by the number of people. In the UK a discretionary service charge of 10 to 12.5% is common in restaurants, and it is often already on the bill, so check before you add another.

Rounding up each share to the pound means everyone can pay in whole numbers and the extra goes to the tip. This splits evenly. If one person had a lot more, work out their part separately and split the rest.

Questions

Is a tip expected in the UK?

Usually 10 to 12.5% in sit-down restaurants, often already added as a service charge. It's optional and you can ask for it to be removed.

Can I split it unevenly?

Not here. Take off what the one person owes first and split the remainder.

What does rounding up do?

Each person pays a whole number of pounds, and the difference is shown as extra on top.
